What can you do in Estonia?

There's lots to see and to do in Estonia. You can visit cities, museums and enjoy nature! But for people who are looking for something extra, there's much to offer.

Walking in a country with so many forests and pure nature is extraordinary! People also go to the forests to pick fruits and mushrooms. You can find traces of wild boars, moose, wolves and bears. The chance you actually encounter one is very small, because the animals are more scared for us than we are for them. You can also see many bird species and plants that no longer exist in the west of Europe since a long long time. There's also primeval forest to be found here, another thing that doesn't exist anymore in the west of Europe. You can get a guide on request if you tell us before hand. The guide can, beside guiding you through the forest, tell you everything you want to know about all the plant species and animals. Not only the old forests, but also the small villages give you a sense of being in a different age.

A cycling holiday is very popular also with the Estonians themselves. The Estonians often go to islands like Saaremaa (the biggest island). But the rest of the country is also great for cycling tours. Places like Pärnu and Laahemaa (national park) are good examples for that. Unfortunately, there are no special strips on the road for cyclists, so you'll have to be careful. Cycling is an ideal method to discover the peace and the beauty of the country. Tallinn is an exception, because it's not a cycling-friendly city. But they are working on it to change that, on the moment more special strips for cyclists are made.

Cross-country skiing is one of the most popular outdoor activities of the country. It is said that Estonians are born with cross-country skis. In a country with 4 to 5 months with a high probability of snow fall, this comes in handy. In Tallinn there's even a route through a beautiful suburban area, which is completely lit every night. This route is about 4 kilometers from our house. But even nearer to the house are a few routes.

There are other sports that can be done in the vicinity of our house. There are two basketball courts, a soccer field and an indoor swimming pool on 200 meters distance from the house. The swimming pool includes a sauna, a gym and a massage parlor. You can also do roller-skating an the most beautiful route is found at the beach of Pirita. This route is 8 kilometers long and has a beautiful view over the harbor and runs along the beach.

Sea kayaking on the Baltic sea is incredibly beautiful. Sea kayaking has been arranged by www.retked.ee. They have spontaneous guides who can take you with them along the coast of Estonia. They also arrange cross-country skiing trips!

Skiing could be done anywhere, even in Tallinn you probably can. Most of the time there's snow, but unfortunately the hills are not high enough. Only in Ötapaa, in the south of country, the hills are high enough. There's a skiing area there, but it's not very big and the hills aren't that high.
